CARD CHARGES TO BE OUTLAWED

The government is to bring in new rules from January 2018 that will mean that card – debit or credit – surcharges will become illegal.


‘Surcharging’ is common practice - with businesses ranging from takeaway apps to airlines charging customers to make card payments or for other services such as Paypal. Some industries have acted to absorb the cost and not pass these on to consumers, these rules will bring an end to the practice entirely. The rules will also tackle surcharging by local councils and government agencies.
