GENERAL DATA PROTECTION - A BLUFFER’S GUIDE

As already widely reported, a highly significant piece of data-protection legislation is on the way from the EU and, despite the move towards Brexit, the UK will be implementing the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which will be effective from the 25th of May 2018.


Businesses, irrespective of size, need to plan for the new changes. The aim of the GDPR is to establish a single set of data protection rules across Europe. Organisations and businesses outside the EU will be subject to the GDPR when they collect data concerning any EU citizen; this is one of the reasons why the UK is keeping it after Brexit.

Quite simply, the GDPR will give individuals better control over the personal data held by others, and it may lead many firms to appoint a Data Protection Officer.
