DUNLOP INTRODUCES SOFTEST EVER MOTO2 TYRE

August 11th, 2021.

Following the mid-season break, the FIM Moto2™ and Moto3™ World Championships resumed last weekend with the Grand Prix of Styria at Austria’s Red Bull Ring. It has been a record-breaking season for Dunlop as both championships’ exclusive tyre supplier, with a number of lap and race records smashed in Moto2.

In the first ten Moto2 races of 2021, Dunlop tyres have taken riders to five outright lap records and five race lap records, underlining the one-lap pace of the Dunlop range. But consistency is key in a championship as competitive as Moto2, and the fact that three race lengths have been the fastest ever shows that the race-long performance is improving, too.

As the season passes the halfway point, Remy Gardner leads the Moto2 championship standings, having scored three consecutive wins at the Italian, Catalan and German rounds. Over in Moto3, his Red Bull KTM Ajo teammate Pedro Acosta is the one to watch. The Spaniard extended his championship lead with his fifth win in ten races on Sunday, a remarkable feat in a category famed for its close racing.

New supersoft Moto2 rear tyre introduced
In this weekend’s second race at the Red Bull Ring, Dunlop will give teams the opportunity to run a brand-new supersoft rear Moto2 tyre. The new compound is the softest tyre ever raced in Moto2, and will give riders even more grip than the current soft ‘1’ specification.

Stephen Bickley, Staff Engineer - Moto Track & Grand Prix, Dunlop, explains the introduction of this new supersoft tyre: “The Red Bull Ring is one of the most traction dependent tracks visited on the Grand Prix calendar, so it’s the perfect place to give teams the chance to try the softest tyre ever raced in Moto2. On a race weekend, we work closely with every team to help them extract the maximum performance from the tyres, and this round will be no different. The key challenge will be to balance the rear performance with the front tyre, and ensuring stable pace over a race distance.

“Even though this is the softest tyre ever used in Moto2, we have designed it to perform consistently throughout the entire 25 lap race distance. As always, teams will be able to choose from two front and two rear options. Alongside the ‘0’ spec supersoft, they will have the ‘1’ soft rear tyre available. Every rider chose this tyre last weekend, so we’re interested to see their choices this Sunday.”
