DUNLOP LEADS EWC STANDINGS AS BOL D’OR RACE RETURNS

September 17th, 2021.

Dunlop tyres are the choice of almost two-thirds of the grid in this weekend’s Bol d’Or as the FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) paddock returns to the world-famous French endurance race for the first time in two years. With three Dunlop teams in the top five of the championship standings, all eyes are on the front of the field as the championship battle heats up.

Of the 42 bikes on the entry list, no fewer than 27 have chosen Dunlop tyres. Many are the full-season EWC teams that also raced at Le Mans, Estoril and will complete the season at Most next month, but several have entered the Bol d’Or as a standalone race. The 24-hour race is held at Le Castellet in the south of France and will be the first EWC race to welcome fans to the circuit since 2019.

As always, two teams to watch are Webike SRC Kawasaki France Trickstar and BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team. The two factory teams have finished second and third in both races so far this year - the 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Estoril - to sit first (Kawasaki) and third (BMW) in the championship. A little further back is the VRD Igol Experiences Yamaha in fifth position but still in the fight for a strong championship position.

The ever-competitive Superstock class features bikes that are much more closely related to their roadgoing counterparts. Twenty Superstock bikes will race on Dunlop tyres, many in the Dunlop Independent Trophy that awards prize money to the top finishing independent teams. Dunlop teams National Motos (Honda) and Team 33 Louit April Moto (Kawasaki) are first and third in the standings, and are amongst the key challengers for a win this weekend.

David Auerbacher, Dunlop’s EWC Event Leader, says: “The Bol d’Or is a world-famous event and it’s great for EWC that we can all return to it this year. Our partner teams in both classes are well-placed to fight for the victory and build on their championship results, especially BMW and Kawasaki in Formula EWC and National Motos and Team Louit in Superstock, but there are several other teams that can fight for the win this weekend.

“Some of the Le Castellet circuit has been resurfaced since the last Bol d’Or two years ago, so the Dunlop engineers have been collecting as much information as possible in testing and the early track sessions this week to learn what has changed. After two years away, it’s somewhat of a new challenge for everyone in the paddock. All the teams are fast, and BMW broke the lap record during pre-event testing with a 1:52.484. It’s going to be a fast race and we’re bringing our usual range of development and KR race slicks to support every team with the best tyres possible.”

The race starts at 15:00 CEST tomorrow, Saturday the 18th of September.
