The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) has outlined its involvement in Ridefree, an Highways England initiative aimed at reducing the number of young rider casualties on roads.

Ridefree is a new resource that has benefits for all novice riders. It has won a Prince Michael Road Safety Award, and has been fully researched and evaluated.

The MCIA has a long history of working collaboratively to improve rider safety, and was keen to be part of something that could make a difference nationally to novice riders and, along with other local authority stakeholders, has been actively involved in the project from the outset.

Karen Cole, Director of Safety and Training at the MCIA remains confident that the resource will be incredibly valuable to young and novice riders. “Compulsory Basic Training is a great way to begin riding, but there are a many important skills to master and lots to learn before taking to the road. Making riders better informed before they start their training will enable people to get the most from their CBT, and further ensure they are fully prepared.”

New Riders who complete Ridefree will have better knowledge of the Highway Code, the legal requirements for riding on the road, the importance of regular vehicle checks and the issues of visibility and vulnerability, whilst also being more responsive and more alert than other first-time CBT students.

Using Ridefree speeds up the learning process so trainers can focus more time on practical lessons.
