The Italian aftermarket silencer on my NC750X was becoming increasingly intrusive. And if it was annoying me, then what was it doing to others within my aural space? To be honest, it had been niggling me for a while as, not just the increasing noise, but also, no matter how tight I fixed the rubber-lined clamp that secured it to the passenger footrest hanger, the silencer still turned, so the logo wasn’t straight. No negative effect on performance of course, just aesthetically annoying.
So, a phone call to leading British exhaust manufacturer Scorpion secured a trade discount on a brushed stainless steel replacement silencer. Carbon fibre and Titanium options are also available for the NC, but not quite my style.
It arrived promptly in an attractive and sturdy box, with the silencer, connecting pipe, fittings and instructions all nicely packaged to avoid scratching each other. Simple point, but not always the case.
Inspecting the silencer and fittings it was clear that this is a top-quality product. The secure single bolt bracket is far superior to the wrap-round clamp of the outgoing Italian silencer, and the actual silencer body of the Scorpion is easily twice the size of the Italian part and roughly 25% bigger than the heavier OE silencer.
Scorpion says to allow 30 to 60 minutes to fit and test the exhaust. For me, fiddling around in my home workshop and taking my time, the whole job was done inside 30 minutes. All the parts fitted and lined up perfectly first time without any jiggling, head scratching, adjustments, bodging or foul language. In a professional workshop it would be in and out of the workshop in ten minutes, with just an extra minute to check the fittings after a test ride. Job done.
Out on the road the Scorpion delivers a far more friendly and pleasantly reduced sound, giving a more relaxed ride with a noticeable lift in performance and in round terms another 5mpg for the already frugal NC.
Blimey! It will pay for itself in a few months! Well… maybe a year….
